palestinian factions engaged in this military operation with israel. they're trying to get them to commit to a cessation of hostility force a period of 48 hours to allow for a longer truce to go into effect. the palestinians feel they have the upper hand here, and they are saying they will not stop their attacks into southern israel so long as israel maintains a siege on gaza. they want it lifted and they want guaranteed backed by the international community that israel will no longer engage and target and kill senior leaders of the palestinian factions here in gaza. they want all of these demands guaranteed by the international community. for its part israel wants to approach it from a different angle. they want a complete cessation of hostilities for 38 hours for so followed by a -- other concerns they have. the challenge for egypt is to try and close that gap as quickly as possible because essentially everyone here feels that they're running out of time. you have the israelis amassed on the border and palestinian factions still firing rockets and caught in the middle are the 19.6 milli

this morning. it's changing by the minute out of israel. this morning israeli tv reporting three israelis were killed in rocket strikes in the southern part of the country. this comes as the israeli military has launched an aggressive new campaign to cripple hamas after repeated rocket attacks. as many as 750 this year, they say, launched from gaza into southern israel. last night president obama spoke on the phone with prime minister benjamin netanyahu acknowledging israel's right to defend itself but also urging him to not have civilian casualties. this youtube video showing an air strike yesterday killing the top military commander of hamas. it was part of a widespread campaign against targets that the israeli military says it will broaden in the coming days. this morning defense forces dropped leaflets over gaza warning residents to stay away from hamas operatives. on twitter, a clear message from israeli defense forces. quote, we recommend that no hamas operatives, whether low level or senior leaders, show their faces above ground in the days ahead. president obama also spoke last night w

of the world leaders he has had the most complicated of relationships is israel's benjamin netanyahu. what kind of influence does president obama have over what happens in israel? >> well, john, in general, the american president has a huge role to play. because it's such a close relationship, as we all know. and israelis want to have a good relationship with the united states. to that end, one of the first congratulations that did come in was from the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. the strategic alliance is stronger than ever, said the prime minister. i'll continue to work with president obama in order to assure the interests that are vital to the security of both citizens and both countries. so that's that. obviously, president obama has had a notoriously frosty personal relationship with the prime minister. but the relationship between israel and the united states is very solid. and there are very big issues ahead, not least what to do about iran. we talked about a lot of that over the months and years. will there be a renewed push for the israeli/palestinean peace process. >> ar
